My Husband is Leaving Me
Well, physically anyway. He’s not divorcing me, we’re not trial separating, but he is going away.
My hubby is becoming a sailor. He’s going to boot camp for 9 weeks, then school for 6 weeks. Leaving me here with the Munchkin, 2 crazy dogs, a rabid rabbit and a Japanese fighter fish. Not to mention the house with all the chores, and the holidays screaming around the corner.
Now, you may be thinking, “Colleen, what makes you any different from all the other soon to be military wives? Aren’t there other women about to go through the same ordeal as you?” And you would be correct in assuming this, but there is one big difference between our situation and most of the situations the other newly military families face. Hubby is 37 years old. Yep, you read that correctly, thirty-seven. We have been married 12 years this coming January. Our Munchkin is 11 years old.
Hubby has had a career for the past 18 years of his life. Chef. Specifically of late he has been a Garde Manger chef. To learn what that means and more about what he has been doing up to this point, visit his site. It hasn’t been touched in a while, because he’s been a little pre-occupied. But that was his second passion. Food. His first passion was art. 10 years into cooking and he was introduced to the purely artistic food form of fruit and vegetable carving. He’s been featured in a magazine for carving. The same magazine a year later asked him to create carved beverage vessels. It has been pretty cool.
So what brought him to military? Not entirely sure. He was military in his younger life. He comes from a family of military. And there are so many great things one can do in the military. So for his future and his family’s future, he decided to look into what was available, and 3 months later here we are on the verge of boot camp.
Speaking for myself, I’m nervous, excited, anxious, worried and a myriad of other emotions all rolled into one big ball. But most of all I’m proud. I am so very proud of my husband. The 37 year old naval recruit going to boot camp. I’m proud he is standing up for himself and forging a new path to see what else is out there for him. I’m proud of his integrity, his perseverence, his dedication. It won’t be easy, but I guarantee he’ll make it look like it is. He’s been through a lot these past 10 months, and it is his turn to shine.
So shine on, baby. Munchkin and I will be right here cheering you on.

Oh, wow. I can’t imagine how hard this must be. But you are doing a better job than I would be, you sound very supportive. And that is equally important in serving this country. Good for you both.
Maggie~
Thank you. I so appreciate that.
